Question by Jawombka: With feeding birds is it just as good as a feeder to just put the seed on the ground ?
I have been putting lots of seed on the ground in my back yard in a couple places, getting lots of birds all daylight hours, and other than a hawk showing up occasionally it is working well. Anything i need to know about methods of bird feeding ?

The main reason people use bird feeders is because it keeps the food packaged, and clean. It also keeps animals other than birds from eating it.
Putting it on the ground works fine, too.

Putting food into a feeder and hanging it, say on a tree branch, is a good idea because it keeps them safer from predators like cats, and hawks. A covered bird table is ideal. You can even put food up into the cleft of a tree, which is another safer place.
With regard to food: experts say it is not a good idea to put peanuts out during nesting time, because baby birds can choke on them if the parents try and feed them with the nuts. Although peanuts in feeders are fine for birds at other times – especially during the winter.
Check on the internet if you want to consider making bird mixes and cakes yourself, or just go to the pet food shop and they should have quite a variety.
